Updated: Aug 28, 2024

Traveling with infant by airplane can be a daunting experience, especially for first-time parents. Questions about strollers, baby food, and seat assignments can add to the stress. To help you navigate your journey smoothly, here are some essential tips for flying with your baby, including expert advice from Philippa Christian, child carer to the stars and author of *Nanny Confidential*.

Consider Flight Times

Choosing the right flight time can make a significant difference. While it might be cheaper to fly later in the day, if your baby tends to get tired and grumpy in the afternoon, it’s worth paying a little extra for a flight that coincides with their happier hours. A cheerful baby can make the journey more pleasant for everyone.

Booking Seats for Babies

Infants booked on flights are not assigned a seat and must travel in a bassinet or on their parent's lap. If you prefer your baby to have their own seat, be sure to request it when you book your tickets. Additionally, request a baby meal during booking. Airlines can provide a limited range of baby food, milk, bottles, cereals, and rusks, but it’s wise to bring along items you know your baby likes.

Passport and Documentation

If you’re flying internationally, remember that your baby will need their own passport. Obtaining a passport photo of a baby can be challenging, so allow plenty of time to get it right. Start the process well ahead of your departure date in case you need multiple attempts.

Packing Your Carry-On

Christian recommends investing in a backpack with multiple dividers. This keeps your hands free to cuddle your baby and helps organize essentials. Here’s what to pack:

- Baby milk (breast milk or powdered formula and sterilized water)

- Juice and baby food in liquid, gel, or paste form

- Disposable wipes

- Several changes of clothes for both your baby and yourself.

Strollers and Bassinets

Airlines may allow you to bring a collapsible stroller, cot, bassinet, or baby capsule. For convenience, check your stroller at the airport and use one provided by the airline, free of charge. An airline staff member will collect it from you at the boarding gate.

Timing Feeds

Ear pain during takeoff and landing can be a common issue for babies. Christian suggests timing feeds for these moments, as sucking on a bottle can help alleviate discomfort. If feeding isn’t possible, a pacifier can also do the trick.

Dressing in Layers

“The temperature on planes is usually quite a bit cooler,” says Christian. Dress your baby in layers that can be easily removed or added as needed. Opt for tops and bottoms that make diaper changes more efficient and ensure nothing is too tight or uncomfortable.

Using Baby-Friendly Amenities

Many airports and airlines offer amenities for families traveling with babies. Use baby changing tables available in selected washrooms and bring a plastic changing mat for added convenience. Don’t hesitate to ask the crew for help if needed.

Traveling with a baby may require extra preparation, but with these tips, you can make the journey smoother and more enjoyable. Plan ahead, pack wisely, and maintain a positive attitude to create wonderful travel memories with your little one. Safe travels!
